Installing French Drains, Channel Drains, & Other Drainage Systems In Your Yard

It’s important to note that drainage work requires significant work to your property. The ground will need to be dug up for trenching to be properly installed to fix the problem. After Carolina Irrigation’s work is done, additional landscaping (by a third-party landscaper) may need to be completed to get your property looking like new.

French Drains

Distinguishable by their drain tile, French drains are trenches covered by rock that leads water into a pipe. Once in the pipe, water is redirected to a more desirable location.

Dry Creek Beds

Aesthetically pleasing and effective, dry creek beds are a great solution for properties with shaded areas and little slope. They are able to move a large amount of water, cut down on erosion, and prevent too much soil movement. Design options range from simple to elaborate making them a statement piece for some landscapes.

Channel Drains

Commonly used to keep hardscapes like driveways, patios, and pool decks free of standing water, channel drains include long grates that collect water and move it through underground trenches.

Pop Up Emitter

A pop up emitter releases water away from your home and to a more desirable location on your property. They are the endpoint to the PVC piping that makes up your drainage system.

Downspout Catch Basin

Downspout catch basins connect to your gutter system and are designed to move water away from the house and surrounding plant beds. They can be modified to your property, as some need extensions or underground drain lines to prevent pooling water.

Downspout Defender Catch Basin

The downspout defender catch basin is used when you have a large number of trees hanging over the roof of your house, as that can cause leaves and other debris to fall into the system.

Drainage Solutions - Troubleshooting FAQs

Yes. Drainage systems can be installed in existing landscapes with minimal disturbance, and we take care to restore affected areas as much as possible.

Common signs you may need drainage improvements include:

  • Standing water in the yard
  • Water pooling near the foundation
  • Soil erosion or washed-out mulch
  • Soggy lawn areas that never dry
  • Water stains or moisture in crawl spaces or basements

A drainage system is designed to collect and redirect excess water away from your home, landscape, and hardscapes to prevent pooling, erosion, and water damage.

Temporary disturbance may occur during installation, but we work carefully to minimize impact and avoid unnecessary damage to roots, trees, and existing landscaping.

We install and service a variety of drainage solutions, including:

  • Downspout drainage and extensions
  • Catch basins
  • Area drains
  • Yard and landscape drains
  • Pop-up emitters
  • Underground piping systems

Yes. Periodic maintenance such as cleaning catch basins, checking outlets, and flushing lines helps ensure proper performance.

Always have utilities marked before digging. If drainage or irrigation lines may be present, it’s best to contact a professional to avoid damage.

Overflowing catch basins are usually caused by:

  • Debris buildup (leaves, mulch, sediment)
  • Insufficient pipe size
  • Heavy rainfall exceeding system capacity

Regular maintenance helps prevent this.

Possible reasons include:

  • Inadequate drainage capacity
  • Blocked or clogged pipes
  • Improper slope or grading
  • Soil conditions that drain poorly

A site evaluation can determine the cause.

This is often caused by:

  • Debris buildup
  • Blocked outlet
  • Crushed or damaged pipe

Cleaning or repairing the outlet usually resolves the issue.

A downspout drain connects to your gutter downspouts and carries roof runoff underground away from the foundation to a safe discharge point.

This may indicate:

  • A disconnected or broken downspout line
  • A blocked drainage pipe
  • Improper discharge location

This should be addressed promptly to avoid foundation damage.

Yes. Proper drainage helps move water away from the foundation, reducing the risk of erosion, moisture intrusion, and long-term structural issues.

When properly installed, drainage systems can last many years, depending on soil conditions, water volume, and maintenance.

Yes. Drainage lines can clog over time due to sediment, roots, or debris, especially without routine maintenance.
